Modern fans of country might not immediately recognize Wariner's name or talents, but this would make a great addition to any country-lover's collection. During a six-year stint with MCA in the 1980's, Wariner scored 19 consecutive top 10 hits, eight of them going to No. 1 on Billboard magazine's Hot Country Singles chart. The most successful of those songs included "Some Fools Never Learn" (1985, his second No. 1 hit), "What I Didn't Do" (1985), "You Can Dream of Me" (1986), "Lynda" (1987) and "I Got Dreams" (1989). In the early 1990s, Wariner continued his success with Arista Records, with several of his songs reaching the top 10.

Wariner, however, continued to maintain his popularity through his instrumental talents. One example was 1991's "Restless," a collaboration with Ricky Skaggs, Vince Gill and Mark O'Connor (from O'Connor's album The New Nashville Cats). "Restless" won Wariner (as well as Skaggs and Gill) his first Grammy Award in 1991 for Best Country Vocal Collaboration. In 1996, Wariner released an album of all instrumental tracks called No More Mr. Nice Guy.

Wariner also remained in the public eye with his songwriting talents. His composition, "Longneck Bottle" (a No. 1 hit by Garth Brooks), along with a No. 1 duet from early 1998 with singer Anita Cochran called "What If I Said" (his first No. 1 in more than eight years.)

The highlight of Wariner's career came in the spring of 1998. Now recording for Capitol Records, his song "Holes in the Floor of Heaven" - a song about dealing with grief of close friends and relatives - promptly shot to No. 2 and won the Country Music Association awards for Single of the Year and Song of the Year.

New Don Williams Album Snuck Under Radar This Week

A brand new album by the country legend Don Williams was released this week in the US. Entitled The Journey, it was originally released in the UK before it hit this market last Tuesday. Don Williams began his solo career in 1971, singing popular ballads and amassing seventeen No. 1 hits. Only four of his 46 singles didn't make it to the Top Ten. His straightforward vocals, soft tones, and an imposing build earned him the nickname "The Gentle Giant" of country music. Some of his biggest hits include Tulsa Time, I Believe In Love and You're My Best Friend.

It is being distributed on the independent Aspirion Records label. That Nashville Sound has a copy on the way and will be doing a review later this month...

What A First Week For Taylor Swift

Singer/songwriter Taylor Swift has solidified her position as one of the most important artists to emerge on the popular music scene this decade as her sophomore album, Fearless, debuted this morning in the #1 slot atop Billboard’s Top 200 Albums Chart, with sales of 592,304 copies in its first week in stores.

This is the largest opening U.S. sales week in 2008 by a female artist in all genres of music, and the fourth biggest overall, behind Lil Wayne, AC/DC and Coldplay. With 129,046 copies sold digitally, Fearless is the biggest country digital album debut in the history of Nielsen’s Soundscan, and the 4th biggest digital album debut to date, behind only Coldplay, Jack Johnson, and Kanye West.Taylor, who writes all of her own material and co-produced her album, has the highest country sales debut of 2008 -- the only other country artists this year to debut at #1 on the Top 200 chart were Alan Jackson, George Strait and Kenny Chesney. Fearless is the highest sales debut for a female country artist since Shania Twain and the Dixie Chicks’ 2002 album releases.

“White Horse,” a track from Fearless that was featured on the season premiere of Grey’s Anatomy, will debut at #13 on Billboard’s all-genre Hot 100 singles chart this week, giving Taylor her 6th Top 20 debut of 2008. This breaks the all-time Billlboard record for the number of Top 20 debuts in a calendar year by any artist. In addition, Taylor’s 6 debuts and 7 total tracks on tomorrow’s charts each tie her with Hannah Montana for the most by a female artist in a single week. Of the 13 tracks on Fearless, 11 have now spent time on the Hot 100.Taylor reached another huge online milestone today, surpassing the 120 MILLION mark for music streams on MySpace, where she is consistently at the top of their highest ranking artists in all genres of music. Taylor has had more than 20 million MySpace streams in the past 10 days.

“Love Story,” the lead single from Fearless, is currently in its second week at #1 on both the Billboard and USA Today/Country Aircheck country radio charts, reaching a weekly radio audience of more than 40 million listeners. When Fearless was released last week, it secured the #1 slot at the top of iTunes all-genre Top Albums chart, with six songs placing in the mainstream Top 20. Taylor had 13 of the Top 15 songs on iTunes’ Top Country Songs chart, including the entire Top 10.

Fearless has already become Nashville’s most critically-acclaimed record this year, earning rave reviews from many of the nation’s top publications, including The New York Times, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, Billboard, the Los Angeles Times, USA Today, Village Voice, Blender, People, Entertainment Weekly and The Associated Press.Taylor released her self-titled debut CD in 2006, it has since been certified triple-platinum (with sales of more than 3.5 million copies), and is currently the best-selling country title of 2008.

Taylor is the only female artist ever to have five consecutive Top 10 singles from a debut album on the Billboard country chart, and at the age of 17, she became the youngest person ever to single-handedly write and sing a number-one country single entirely on her own ("Our Song" spent 6 consecutive weeks at #1 atop Billboard's Country Singles Chart). She is the first female solo artist in country music history to write or co-write every song on a platinum-selling debut CD.

Great Country Music Book On Shelves- A Guitar & A Pen

Although released earlier this year, That Nashville Sound, just found out about a great new book on the country music songwriting process- A Guitar and a Pen- Stories By Country Music's Greatest Songwriters by Robert Hicks.

This unique collection presents, for the first time, the literary work of some of the best storytellers in the world: the songwriters who cut and polish tales down to sparkling three minute gems. A blend of fiction and nonfiction, humor and poignancy, these tales cover a wide range of styles and country artists. Nashville, Music City USA, is a place where entertainment and artistic fortune are built on the bedrock of songwriters.

It has been said in Nashville over and over that "It all begins with a song." Country music's wordsmiths have shaped and molded some of the greatest stories ever told into three and a half minutes that fit neatly on the radio. The editors of A Guitar and a Pen set out to answer the question, "If they can put all that into a song, what could and would they do with a blank piece of paper and a pen?" The answer lies in this remarkable collection of creativity and insight.

Authors in the book include:
Vince Gill
Hal Ketchum
Kris Kristofferson
Charlie Daniels
& lots more

Marx has not one, but two albums coming on December 1st- both unique in their own right.

Emotional Remains is a bit of a departure for Marx, with a brand of rock that some may not think is synonomous with the artist, writer, and producer that has helped to launch sales of a combined 50 million albums worldwide.

"This is the most straight ahead, modern rock album I've made in my career thus far," said Marx." "And the fact that I can just put music out on the web, direct to our fans, is what makes this project feel like a labor of love."

Sundown, on the other hand, includes original material written and performed by Richard, duets with musicians Toni Braxton and Vince Gill, as well as covers of songs from such iconic artists as The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. This album marks the first of Richard's releases to include cover songs on its official track listing.

Richard says, "I really enjoyed venturing out of my comfort zone performing the covers on Sundown. I found recording these songs to be a challenging but, ultimately, a very rewarding experience. I just hope there are songs on this album that move someone other than me."
In addition to "Wild Horses" and The Beatles' "And I Love Her," featuring country singer and songwriter Vince Gill, Richard lends his expansive vocal range and unique instrumentation to Roberta Flack's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," and Sade's "Ordinary Love", and the original song "Suddenly," featuring best-selling singer Toni Braxton.

Both albums will be available for purchase through http://www.richardmarx.com/ and delivered as of December 1.

Lee Greenwood accepts Presidential Appointment to National Arts Council

Lee Greenwood, known for writing and performing the most recognized patriotic song of our time – “God Bless the U.S.A.” – will soon be garnering air miles to and from the nation’s capitol. Greenwood has accepted a Presidential appointment to the National Endowment for the Arts council and will serve a six-year term.

Appointed by President George W. Bush and confirmed by the Senate, the Nashville-based country singer is scheduled to be sworn in today, Nov. 17, as one of the 14 regular members of the National Council on the Arts. Council members advise the NEA chairman, and their portfolio includes reviewing and making recommendations on applications for grants from the $145-million-a-year federal agency.

“My appointment to the council of the National Endowment of the Arts is a great opportunity for me to be involved in searching out the best in art in our American culture & to lend a hand to help develop talented artists & artistic programs that would otherwise go unnoticed,” adds Greenwood.

Greenwood, who grew up on a farm near my hometown of Sacramento, is the lone council member appointed by Bush who will serve throughout the four years of the Obama term. The other 13 slots are occupied by Bush appointees but will come due during the next President's term

CD Review- Randy Houser- Anything Goes

Randy Houser created a great new sound to country music Nov. 18 with the Universal Records South release of his first album, Anything Goes. Call it Good-Ole-Boy-Country-Twang-Honkytonk-Southern-Country-Cool-Songwriting. The old saying is that you can’t be all things to all people. Randy Houser proves that saying wrong.

The first radio release off of the album, the title track Anything Goes, is a beautiful old-school country ballad that vocally sounds amazingly close to Ronnie Dunn (of Brooks & Dunn fame). All the other songs on the album—eight of which Houser co-wrote—are intoxicating as well. With his intense, fiery delivery and soulful sense of urgency, Houser is simply one of the most compelling and believable voices in country music today. This is the same songwriter that, shortly after his very first publishing deal, channeled his own personal animal impulses into a little song they called “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk.” You may have heard of it…

Born and raised in central Mississippi—where country, blues, R&B and gospel naturally converge—Houser had the additional advantage of having a dad who was a highly regarded singer and musician. (He tips his hat to his late father in the songs “Boots On” and “I’ll Sleep.”) By the time Houser was “15 or 16,” he was writing and performing his own songs. “I hated playing ‘covers’ of the hits,” he explains. “I knew that if I was ever going to do anything in music, I was going to have to learn to express myself. Otherwise, it was going to be the same-old same-old.”

This CD has many highlights. “My Kind Of Country” is a rowdy barroom jam ala Keith Anderson’s “Pickin’ Wildflowers” that gets your foot stompin. “How Many Times” leans to a more Motown influence that never loses its Nashville edge. “Something Real” sees Houser hitting a falsetto in the chorus that is as beautiful as it is distinctive. “Lie” is a great Brad Paisley-like talk-through song that displays a great sense of humor and musical timing. “Wild Wild West” and “Paycheck Man” are radio-friendly straight-forward country songs that while not particularly distinctive, are fun to listen to.

Comparisons to other artists, while natural to do, are unfair. This is just Randy Houser. A Randy Houser that, based on some great songwriting thus far in his career, is likely to be around awhile. Anything Goes is a great CD- one certainly to add to your collection.

Country Music Comes To The Rescue Of A Community

On Thursday, March 1, 2007, the small town of Enterprise, AL (population just over 23,000) was struck by a massive EF4 tornado, leaving a swath of devastation in its wake. In the heart of the storm's path was Enterprise High School. The tornado ripped the roof from parts of the school, destroyed a hallway, the gymnasium and the football stadium. Eight students lost their lives in the devastation. In total, the storm was responsible for nine deaths and more than 120 injuries. With damages estimated at $307 million, the entire community was left paralyzed. Since then, the students of Enterprise High School have been attending classes in trailers and temporary outlets. The high school is due to be rebuilt by the 2010-11 school year at a cost of over $80 million.

Country Crossing Records has announced plans to release WE ARE ENTERPRISE: The Album To Help Rebuild Enterprise High School, a collection of moving and inspirational songs recorded by some of the most renowned names in country music to embrace the community of Enterprise, Alabama and assist in rebuilding the Enterprise High School. Spearheading the WE ARE ENTERPRISE project is Enterprise resident Ronnie Gilley (Ronnie Gilley Properties/Ronnie Gilley Entertainment/BamaJam Music & Arts Festival), who partnered with music industry legend James Stroud (producer for Tim McGraw, Toby Keith and Clint Black/Former president of Dreamworks Records-Nashville and co-chairman of Universal Music Group Nashville/President of Ronnie Gilley Entertainment and Stroudavarious Records). The pair, who executive produced the project, assembled an incredible cast of country music giants to create an extraordinary album to assist with the overwhelming cost of the construction of the new Enterprise High School.

"When Ronnie made me aware of the suffering his community had endured and the ongoing hardships facing its high school students and faculty, I wanted to help any way that I could," said Stroud. "We had the idea to craft an album that would not only help with the cost of rebuilding the school, but that would also uplift the community with its message. Once we started calling our artist friends and hearing their desire to lend their time and talent, we knew the idea would work."

WE ARE ENTERPRISE is stacked with songs contributed by award-winning, multi-platinum-selling, country music superstars Deborah Allen, John Anderson, Clint Black, Joe Diffie, Shelly Fairchild, George Jones, Tracy Lawrence, Richie McDonald, Lorrie Morgan, Aaron Tippin and Darryl Worley. The 11-song line-up features a number of new songs crafted exclusively for this project (Worley's "Katie's Song," "This Is The Time," by Deborah Allen and Shelly Fairchild's "It's All Gonna Work Out") plus some new takes on timeless classics ("You've Got A Friend" by Diffie, Morgan's "You Are So Beautiful" and "Amazing Grace" by Jones).

The album is slated for a December 16, 2008 release and will be available in retail outlets as well all major digital outlets (iTunes, Amazon, Rhapsody and WalMart.com). To commemorate the release within the Enterprise community, several of the artists will travel to Enterprise on street date to make two in-store appearances tentatively scheduled to take place at Wal*Mart locations in Enterprise and Dothan. (Information on participating artists and confirmed retail locations and times will be announced shortly.)

All record company and artist net proceeds from sales of the WE ARE ENTERPRISE will be donated to the fund for the rebuilding of the high school.

Up and Coming New Nashville- Manda Leigh (With Exclusive Interview)

Each week, That Nashville Sound runs our Up And Coming New Nashville column, unveiling an artist we think the country music world should take note of. This week's new artist is Manda Leigh.

Manda Leigh is a native of Salyersville, Kentucky. She is a singer/songwriter and plays rhythm guitar. Her debut album "Hillbilly Heroin" was produced by Grammy Award Winning country music singer Rebecca Lynn Howard and co-written with Howard and Elizabeth Sizemore (Manda Leigh's sister). Hillbilly Heroin can't be put into any genre...perhaps it's created its own..."Hillbilly Metal". With everything from hard rockin' guitar solos, banjo pickin', and squeeze boxes this album is at least unique. Manda Leigh began writing songs at age 8 and playing guitar at 15. Though, she didn't began singing until she was 25, you can't hear it in her unique voice. Staying true to her roots and where she comes from she and Elizabeth wrote "Hell On Tip Top" a kick-ass rockabilly tune about down home partying. The title track, "Hillbilly Heroin" was co-written with her sister about the plague the legal drug Oxycontin has inflicted on their hometown. "I Ache" is a song about a special man in Elizabeth's life who passed away. "One Hit Wonder" is a light-hearted mellow song co-written with Rebecca Lynn Howard.

We had a chance to sit down with Manda for a TNS exclusive interview:

TNS- What brought you to Nashville?

ML- I moved to Nashville to work on my writing and my overall sound as an artist.

TNS- Looking over your career thus far, what do you rank as a couple of the highlights?

ML- One highlight would be when I recorded my first album at Station West here in Nashville. I had a lot of great musicians that played on this album. Mark Beckett on drums, on bass I had Mike Brignardello and Michael Rhodes, Pat Buchanan played lead guitar dobro/strings Jonathon Yudkin and Billy Panda is on the acoustic guitar. Rebecca Lynn Howard produced the album and co-wrote a few songs on it as well. All of that was exciting but the highlight of my career so far would be seeing pride on the faces of my parents.

TNS- What might people be surprised to find out about you?

ML-I am very shy, I get terrible stage fright and I'm pretty much a homebody.

TNS- What kind of music are you listening to? What's in your IPod?

ML- I listen to anything from rap to bluegrass. I love Sheryl Crow, Duffy, The Ting Tings, Eminem, Janis Joplin, The Allman Brothers.

TNS- If you had a crystal ball and looked forward ten years, what do you see for yourself?

ML- I'm working on some new material right now with Rebecca Lynn Howard and Elisha Hoffman so I would hope to see myself making a living doing what I love...music.

Jessica Andrews’ return to the spotlight comes via a song written by her boyfriend singer/songwriter Marcel (who is on the Disney owned Lyric Street label) and produced by Jay DeMarcus of Rascal Flatts fame. She is the first artist announced for Lyric Street’s new imprint Carolwood Records, with a full-length album on the way.

“I think it took every bump along the road to get me to where I am now,” says Andrews. “I’m much more at peace with being able to do what I love artistically and musically, and now I feel like this is truly me.”
