Oxygen Channel To Run Show Featuring Country Music Kin Of John Wayne, Loretta Lynn & Daniel Boone

Oxygen has greenlighted a series and new project as part of an aggressive push to ramp up its original programming for 2009. "The Girls," a Nashville-based project that will feature three celebrity offspring -- Jennifer Wayne, granddaughter of John Wayne; Tayla Lynn, granddaughter of Loretta Lynn; and Caroline Cutbirth, great-great-great-great grandniece of Daniel Boone -- as they try to become country music stars. Mark Ford and Kevin Lopez exec produce.

In an interview with Chris Welch, the girls gave some insight on what to expect:

"We've been together for about a year," Lynn, 26, said during a phone interview. "We're b---s to the wall, say anything.

"Jennifer originally had the idea to do a reality show. She and Caroline are good friends and took it to Creative Artists Agency. She contacted Anastasia Brown there and she thought they needed a third girl. They were searching granddaughters of legends and found me on my MySpace. At the time, I was a solo artist and out on the road with my grandmother.

"They thought I'd be the perfect third."

Lynn admits the idea of the girl band started out as a gimmick and she wasn't sure it would work because they all come from different walks of life. The result has been a nice surprise.

"I didn't share any similarities in life with the other two," Lynn said. "They were culturally different. Caroline is from Waco, Texas, and her dad is a dentist. Jennifer grew up in Beverly Hills. I grew up a hillbilly, redneck and barefoot. I lived in a white trailer next to a junkyard with a donkey called Donkeyote, who was the only friend I had.

"So, I really thought it would be a struggle to be part of the group. My music is left of center and theirs is more radio pop. Mine is alt country and my personality is different. Last year, I kind of fought with it, but they're just too hard to resist. I love them."

Lynn says she's a lot like her famous granny, Loretta.

"She said, 'We're cut from the same cloth. It's like your dad wasn't even there,' " Lynn said. "People say I'm a spitting image of her. She's wild as hell, feisty and can call you down in a heartbeat. But she's also one of the most tender grandmothers you could ever have."

Listen To Great New Orleans Christmas Tune By Marc Broussard

Like a good gumbo, Marc Broussard mixes up a whole lotta ingredients in his tunes including country, funk, r&b, cajun and pop influences. He's one of my favorite artists out in the marketplace today- mostly because of his lack of restrictions he places on his music.

His latest holiday release can be heard for free on Marc's MySpace Page. It's entitled "On Santa's Way Home" and it's a great tune about Santa making a detour to Bourbon Street for a little dancin and groovin before going back home to the North Pole. Give it a listen- it's a very fun song.

Just for kicks, we put some of country's biggest names in the tester and came back with these many people that match their names. I wonder what it would be like walking around with a name that everyone recognizes but a face they don't!

Toby Keith Rereleases Christmas Album With A New Twist

Chart-topping music maker and acclaimed entertainer Toby Keith released the multi-platinum album Unleashed in 2002, but the Dec. '08 re-release of his best-selling A Classic Christmas collection could share the earlier work's title. Or maybe more appropriately: "Unbundled."

The two-disc Christmas collection that was 2007's top-selling seasonal release has returned to stores as two separate packages, allowing music fans to select disc-one's secular holiday favorites ("White Christmas," "Silver Bells") or disc-two's spiritually-focused selections ("Little Drummer Boy," "Away In A Manger"). The CMT television special by the same name is set to air Christmas night on the cable network.

Keep an eye on That Nashville Sound, we'll be doing a big Toby Keith giveaway next week- stay tuned!

George Jones Awarded With Kennedy Center Honor

Sunday night's Kennedy Center Honors gala was a fine recognition for some of America's most recognized and legendary performers. George Jones and five other recipients were honored for their distinguished careers and contributions to the arts: singer and actress Barbra Streisand, actor Morgan Freeman, choreographer Twyla Tharp and musicians Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey of The Who.

The honorees, recommended by members of the Kennedy Center's national artists committee, along with past recipients, received their medals at a State Department dinner on Saturday with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

President Bush and first lady Laura Bush played hosts at a reception at the White House on Sunday before going to the center with the guests of honor to watch tributes from celebrities including Joss Stone, Lily Tomlin and past Kennedy Center honoree Clint Eastwood. A two-hour broadcast will air Dec. 30 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.

The first lady spoke during the segment for Jones, 77. "There's no getting tired of a singer like him," she said. Then, Brad Paisley, Randy Travis, Alan Jackson, Garth Brooks and Shelby Lynne took to the stage to perform a set of Jones' biggest hits, including Bartender's Blues, White Lightning and He Stopped Loving Her Today.
He joins other country music icons to win the award including:
Dolly Parton (2006)
Loretta Lynn (2003)
Willie Nelson (1998)
Johnny Cash (1996)
Roy Acuff (1991)

Up And Coming New Nashville- Kim McLean (With Exclusive Interview)

Kim McLean is one of those Nashville behind-the-scenes icons that you may not have heard of, but you have definitely heard. The photo of her is so very representative of her career- she has let the music be at the forefront. Kim McLean is a career songwriter with songs recorded by Tim McGraw, Trisha Yearwood, Lee Ann Womack, Billy Gilman, Jennifer Hanson, and more. She won Gospel Song of the Year at the Dove Awards for "Count Your Blessing" recorded by the Martins. With over 200 of her songs recorded by other artists and heard on TV shows like West Wing, JAG, and Hope & Faith, Kim steps into the artist spotlight with her own music for a groove-rock-country sound that is uniquely her. She's a North Carolina Irish-Cherokee chick who currently lives outside Nashville and tours extensively.

That Nashville Sound had an opportunity to interview the talented McLean about her music career:

TNS- What brought you to Nashville?

KM- Songwriting. I moved here with my husband and two little girls, our collie, and a hundred original songs. I loved Country music for its honesty and story-telling. I could be real when I wrote Country songs, could tell the whole truth, and write about all of life. Not that I don't love a good love song; but in Country music you can talk about everything. It's like taking a snapshot of life everyday and putting a melody to it.

TNS- Looking over your career thus far, what do you rank as a couple of the highlights?

KM- One great highlight was having Dolly Parton sing with me on my HAPPY FACE album, especially the particular song that we did. It was a song I wrote for my daughters. Truthfully, it's difficult to choose highlights because the whole dream has been such an adventure. I've met many interesting people, some I like, some I don't, some who like me, some who don't. Because of the opportunities Nashville has given me, I have travelled to many other places, and everywhere I go there is someone who has heard a song or two of mine. That's an incredible feeling, a perpetual highlight.

TNS- What might people be suprised to find out about you?

KM- That I went to college after having career success, got my BS in Music and then my MA in Biblical Theology. I love to study, I read incessantly, and I may just go on for my Doctorate one of these days!

TNS- What kind of music are you listening to? What's in your iPod?

KM- I love Jason Mraz, Cold Play, Joni Mitchell, Enya, Dolly (of course), Shelby Lynn, Sheryl Crow, Prince, Lenny Kravitz, Suzanne Vega...boy, what a loaded question! These days we all have thousands of iSongs at our finger tips. Those are the first to come to mind, but I also love oldies. I know the songs better than the groups. You know, 60's and 70's, like "Spirit in the Sky," and "Sugar Sugar."

TNS- If you had a crystal ball and looked forward ten years, what do you see for yourself?

KM- Well, I see lots more music. I feel like my best musical work is yet to come. I see travel, good times, and I see some remodeling projects for my farm-house. : ) My son plays drums for me, so 10 years from now we'll have lots of great stories to tell. And, as I mentioned, I might just be Dr.Kim McLean by then - the groovy theologian.
