NPR Interviews Steve Martin On New Album

"I just have an affection for it offstage and the sounds it can make. It's like listening to a mystery when you hear some people play. I just say, 'I have no idea how they do that.' It's magic, and it's beautiful."

That's Steve Martin's take on the banjo. And you can listen to a lot more of this interview by clicking HERE and going straight to National Public Radio's interview with Steve on his new album The Crow: New Songs for the Five-String Banjo- released exclusively through Amazon a little over a week ago.

Up & Coming New Nashville- Elyse Saunders (With Exclusive Interview)

Elyse Saunders is a fresh young recording artist from Peterborough Ontario, who is rapidly making her mark on the country music scene. From early in her career Elyse surrounded herself with people she could trust and that shared her love for music. Elyse has often referred to herself as just a typical small town girl with a dream and musical passion. To pass her on the street, that is exactly what she would appear to be. To look deeper…and listen to her performances, you quickly realize there is much more to this young talented artist. Her performances far exceed that “small town girl” picture. The emotions and feelings she pours into her songs are deeply rooted and come from a heart that’s mature way beyond her years! She is unwavering in her pursuit to perfect her music and dedicated over a year of searching for just the right producer, musicians and songs that would showcase the rich soulful feel and tone of her voice. The songs she picked would be a part of her life, so they had to be ones she believed in to deliver that raw emotional connection to her listener. In listening to her songs you begin to believe what Elyse believes. Her performance on every song truly comes from her heart and as a listener, you find yourself in that rare experience of living every song…right along with her.

You can listen to this new talent and stream her first self-titled indie album (just released) HERE.
That Nashville Sound had a chance to sit down and interview Ms. Saunders about her time thus far in Nashville...
That Nashville Sound- What brought you to Nashville?
Elyse Saunders- I was working with renowned songwriter/producer Cyril Rawson who is originally from Canada but lived in Nashville and wrote for some of the biggest talent in country music today. He now lives in the same town as me and I had the great fortune of being able to work with him to complete my first album. We completed the album in Nashville with some of the most talented musicians such as Dan Dugmore, Glen Duncam. JT Cornefloss, Steven Sheehan etc. So basically the recording process is what brought me to Nashville. The project turned out amazing and I wouldn't change a thing!
TNS- Looking over your career thus far, what do you rank as a couple of the highlights?
ES- Well I would have to say being able to go to Nashville (twice!) and record my very first album is one of my most highlighted moments. Just being in the Nashville scene with such talented people in the industry was a hige highlight for me. It will always be a memorable experience for me. Another memorable moment was hearing my first single "Nobody's Watchin'" on the radio for the first time. That was pretty exciting! I remember artists like Alan Jackson and Martina McBride were playing and then my song came on right after them...that was pretty cool. A surreal moment I'll also never forget was on July 19th 2008 when I had the chance to open for Deric Ruttan at a local festival in front of 10 000 or more people. It's a feeling you really can't explain until you experience it yourself. After I was done I couldn't stop smiling and wanted to do it again.
TNS- What might people be suprised to find out about you?
ES- That I can be a bit of a "tomboy" sometimes. (laughing) You probably wouldn't be able to tell by my appearance because I like to take care of myself... but I grew up with two brothers so I like to do boy things sometimes.
TNS- What kind of music are you listening to? What's in your iPod?
ES- Well I like to listen to all types of music actually. But I'd say if you had a look at my ipod you probably would find more country in there. I like to listen to Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Jason Aldean and Miranda Lambert a lot. But my mood really decides what I listen to.
TNS- If you had a crystal ball and looked forward ten years, what do you see for yourself?
ES- I see myself living a successful and accomplished life where I have reached the point of stardom. I can see myself on a stage where there are crowds of 50 000 fans there just for me.

Country Music artist Laura Bryna (pictured here with Ace Of Cakes star Duff Goldman and Catherine C. Martens, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-Atlantic) has been involved with the Make-A-Wish Foundation since she was a teen. Bryna saw her own dream come true when she spoke in front of a large benefactor audience at the recent 25th Anniversary Celebration of the foundation’s mid-Atlantic chapter. The event in Washington, D.C. honored members of the Chris Greicius Society – named in honor of a seven year old boy who suffered from leukemia 25 years ago and received the first wish which started the Foundation.

Based in part on her own experiences with an older brother, Bryna co-wrote and recorded the song, “Make A Wish”, which chronicles the life of a young child stricken with a life-threatening medical condition whose wish was for all of her friends wishes to come true. The “Make A Wish” video that Bryna filmed was played at the celebration dinner following her brief remarks.

The dinner honored generous donors, including Chris Greicius Society members, Mid-Atlantic chapter founders, board members, emeritus board members, volunteers and special wish granters.

The dinner took place at the Park Hyatt in Washington, D.C. Bryna and Bryna’s video was the evening’s featured entertainment. A number of high level Make-A-Wish Foundation executives and patrons were present as well as other notable dignitaries.

“This was such an honor,” said Bryna, who is on the board of the mid-Atlantic chapter. “The Make-A-Wish Foundation truly makes a difference in the lives of so many people and I was thrilled to be able to play a small role.”

Laura Bryna is passionate about not only her singing career, but also about the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The petite brunette with the powerhouse vocals is the spokesperson and voice of a national ad campaign for the Air National Guard. Her latest single, ‘Hometown Heroes’, was co-written by Bryna to honor all the unsung heroes in our daily lives as well as the men and women who tirelessly serve in America’s armed forces.

TNS Wishes A Happy Birthday To Sara Evans

That Nashville Sound wishes Sara Evans a big hearty Happy Birthday wish today- her 38th.

In 1997, Evans released her first album under RCA, Three Chords and the Truth. Critics praised the album for returning to traditional country and included it in many of their year's "top 10" lists. The album included a cover version of older Country song, Patsy Cline's "Imagine That", which originally reached No. 21 for Cline on the Country charts in 1962. However, the album did not catch on with country radio at the time, and none of the three singles made the top 40. It would be another year before Evans gained full popularity. In 1998 Evans released her second album, No Place That Far. Her first single, "Cryin' Game", hardly made a ripple on the charts, peaking outside Country's Top 40. However, it was her next single, "No Place That Far", a duet with Vince Gill, that brought Evans massive success, reaching No. 1 on the Country charts, as well reaching the Billboard Hot 100 Top 40, Evans' first major hit. The rest, they say, was history. Celebrate her big day with a quick video watch of that first big hit...

Listen To John Rich's Newest Single "Shuttin' Detroit Down"

Listen to it HERE.

Rarely is a song written and released to radio within two weeks, but that's just what John Rich has done with his new single, "Shuttin' Detroit Down." Rich debuted the song last week at Detroit's WYCD-FM and listener response was immediate and overwhelming.

"I've been watching the news like everybody else," Rich told Detroit radio station WYCD. "I'm sitting there, getting madder and madder, watching New York and Washington D.C. sling billions of dollars back and forth to each other while the hard-working people in America are just going, 'What in the world is going on up there?'"

Rich was just finishing his upcoming solo album, Son of a Preacher Man, when he wrote "Shuttin' Detroit Down." But thanks to response to the new song, Warner is halting production so the tune can be included. It's a case where fans have made a real difference, as calls and emails have flooded radio stations requesting the song.

"This is what country music's all about to me," Rich told New Jersey's K98.5 radio. "Try to say something that matters to you as an artist and a fan of country music -- and if it matters to me, there's a good chance it's gonna matter to a lot of other people."

John Rich's debut solo album for Warner Bros., Son of a Preacher Man, is due out in May.

Reba & Jimmy Wayne Help Erase Illiteracy

Reba McEntire and Jimmy Wayne are helping children discover the joy of reading through First Book, which gives kids the opportunity to own their first books. “I am a big reader myself, so I know how books can enrich your life,” says Reba, at one time the media spokesperson for First Book. “I have been blessed to see so many children receive their first book.” Jimmy, who took time to read to some Nashville preschoolers, tells Country Weekly, “[First Book] inspires children to get interested in reading.”

First Book provides new books to children in need addressing one of the most important factors affecting literacy – access to books. The inspiration for the organization was born when Kyle Zimmer, a corporate lawyer by day and tutor at an inner-city soup kitchen by night, discovered that the children she tutored had no books to read.

Kyle discovered that the majority of programs reaching low-income populations have few, if any, age-appropriate books for the children they serve. She realized that there were millions of potential readers, future workers, citizens and parents, who were eager to love reading and learning, but were without the tools to do so. Spurred to action, Kyle left her day job and in 1992 founded First Book to provide new books and resources to the children who needed them the most.

That first year, First Book delivered 12,000 books to local communities in the Washington DC area. Now, 17 years later, First Book has deliver more than 60 million books to programs serving children in need across the United States and Canada.

By providing new books to children in preschools and after-school programs, mentoring and tutoring programs, shelters and day care centers and beyond, First Book provides resources to empower teachers and administrators. With access to high-quality books, educational materials and more, these caring leaders can better teach, plan curriculum and impart a love of learning, elevating the quality of the programs and opportunities available to children in need.

Through our innovative models, First Book has transformed a fragmented group of programs serving the most vulnerable children into a vibrant, centralized network numbering more than 20,000 groups serving millions of children. Through the First Book Marketplace, First Book National Book Bank and First Book Advisory Boards, First Book continues to expand our offerings of free and low-cost books to better meet the needs of the programs and children we serve.

First Book envisions a world where all children have an enriched learning environment with new books and educational resources of their own. Click on firstbook.org for more information.
