Country Music Loses Two Musicians Too Early

Ryan "Troop" Jones
The world of country music lost two talented musicians this week with the passing of fiddle player Ryan "Troop" Jones of the LoCash Cowboys and Chris Kent, a bass player known for his work with Lorrie Morgan, Wynonna Judd and others.

Jones' first foray into country music was with artists like Wade Hayes, Brian Comas and Jeff Carson. He joined the LoCash Cowboys in the world-renowned Tootsies Orchid Lounge before he joined the band in 2006 as their full-time fiddle player. Jones was also proficient on guitar and mandolin. He was hospitalized just after the Fourth of July for a life-threatening ulcer before getting pneumonia. It would eventually take his life.

The band had this as an announcement: "Today is a sad day in the Locash World. We lost Ryan “Troop” Jones…our Brother & our Best Friend. Our thoughts & prayers go out to his family. TROOP WILL LIVE FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS. -Locash"

Chris Kent
Kent was a versatile and accomplished bass player and much-loved member of the Nashville music community and passed away from cancer at only 44 years old.

Kent was a seasoned veteran of the stage and studio. He performed or recorded with a variety of country, rock, jazz and Christian music acts, including Lorrie Morgan, Toni Braxton, Larry Carlton, Billy Preston, Steve Winwood and Stevie Wonder, to name just a few. He was known for his enormous smile and upbeat personality.

Country Connection News Update - Bob Seger & Kelly Clarkson

While certainly not country music-specific artists by any stretch of the imagination, both Bob Seger and Kelly Clarkson have country music ties. Seger had a duet with Martina McBride called "Chances Are" in the 1998 film, Hope Floats. Kelly Clarkson has had a deeper flirtation with the country music charts with high-performing duets with Jason Aldean and Reba McEntire over the last five years. Both have new projects that are being released shortly.

For the first time, all of Bob Seger’s top hits have been gathered for a career-spanning 2CD and digital collection titled Ultimate Hits: Rock And Roll Never Forgets.  To be released Monday, November 21 by Capitol/EMI, the 26-track collection includes “Night Moves,” “Turn The Page,” “Hollywood Nights,” “Mainstreet,” “Old Time Rock And Roll,” “Like A Rock,” “Her Strut,” “We’ve Got Tonight,” “Against The Wind,” “Still The Same,” and many other Seger classics, as well as the Detroit rocker’s two #1 radio singles from this year, “Downtown Train” and his current #1 Classic Rock hit, “Hey Hey Hey Hey (Going Back To Birmingham).”

The collection also includes Seger’s timeless rendition of the Holiday classic “Little Drummer Boy,” its first appearance on a Bob Seger album, as well as the original mono version of Seger’s first hit “Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man.”

Kelly Clarkson has employed a unique method to tease fans with new songs from her Stronger album, being released Monday, October 24th. She’s called upon friends to help officially leak her songs one at a time. So far, the singer has treated fans to “What Doesn’t Kill You (Stronger)” “Dark Side” and “You Love Me.”

This week, Kelly Clarkson has leaked “The War Is Over” with the help of good friend Blake Shelton. There's no denying the girl has pipes.

The Mavericks To Reunite In 2012

Meeting in their native Florida in the early ‘90s, the Mavericks went on to record such hits as “What a Crying Shame” (1992), “There Goes My Heart” (1994), “O What a Thrill” (1994), “Here Comes the Rain” (1995) and “All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down” (1996). In 1995, they received a Grammy for “Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal,” and won Country Music Awards for “Best Vocal Group” in 1995-96 and Academy of Country Music Awards in 1994 and 1995 for “Best Group.”

But by 2003, the hits had stopped and the band had split from MCA Nashville, the group broke up. Raul Malo (vocals, guitar), Robert Reynolds (bass) and Paul Deakin (drums) all went their separate ways. Now, nearly nine years later, word has come out that the band will be reuniting in 2012 for a tour and possible new recordings.

Lead singer Malo says, “I’m excited to get back together with the band. This time out, we’ll get to do things right and finish what we started on our own terms — not subject to the powers that be.”

Reynolds adds, “Time away has really allowed me to miss the guys and the music we made together. We owe it to the fans as a thank you. The thing that saddened me was trying to imagine never playing those songs with my fellow Mavs and for the fans that showed us such love. Its time to correct that, here we come again.”

And according to Deakin, “I’ve always thought of The Mavericks as one of those bands that had an inexplicable chemistry that resulted in a kind of magic on stage. Possibly the relentless pursuit of fun helped the mojo along. The stage is one of those rare places that you instantly get back what you put out.  The Mavericks had a lot of fun putting out over the years.  I can't wait to get back on this horse again.”
