Ray Wylie Hubbard Announces New Album & New Memoirs

Yesterday, legendary Texas singer/songwriter Ray Wylie Hubbard announced that he will be releasing a new album called The Grifter's Hymnal in 2012. In an interview at Engine 145 earlier this year, Hubbard detailed the background story on where and how it was being recorded:

(It is being recorded at) the Festival Hill Music Conservatory in Round Top, Texas. We’re going to the Edythe Bates Old Chapel. You can Google it and see it at Edythe Bates Old Chapel. It’s this church that was built in La Grange, Texas in the 1800’s and they moved it to this music conservatory. They have all these conductors and students from all over the world come and study classic music here. They’ll have a string quartet or someone from the Philadelphia Philharmonic Symphony come down and teach. We’re going to go over there and record with George Reiff who has played bass forever and worked with Jakob Dylan. He produced the last record and has played bass on the last three records. And of course we’ll have Rick Richards who has played drums on all of my records plus all the cool records coming out of Austin. Slaid Cleaves. Gurf Morlix. Kevin Welch. The list is endless. He’s just a great drummer for that crazy Austin Americana sound. And we’re going in with Audley Freed who has worked with the Black Crowes and the Dixie Chicks. He’s going to do some guitar-work and that will be kind of the foundation of the group. We’re going to go in with those guys and record. I’m hoping the spirit of that place will allow that.
In his Facebook post yesterday, he also mentioned that he is working with Thom Jureck on a new memoirs project. That one does not currently have a timeline associated with it. Here is that post from yesterday:

hello fine people,

here is what I have been up to in case you were wondering. i am am in the middle of mixing the new record with george reiff. the musicians who played on the record are rick richards, george reiff, audley freed, billy cassis, lucas hubbard, ian mclagann, ringo starr and brad rice. javi garcia is doing his voodoo magic on the album artwork. the 12 songs were recorded at edith bat...es old chapel at festival hill in round top, tx and the finishing school in austin. we're gonna call it "the grifter's hymnal", got a ring to it., huh?
working on my memoirs with thom jureck, gigging and digging twitter for some reason. gave john david kent a old pair of rough out boots.
safe travels and have a merry whatever,  ray wylie

The Steeldrivers Lose Mandolin Player Mike Henderson

Music critic darlings and Grammy-nominated bluegrass band The Steeldrivers are losing one of their founding members. Mike Henderson announced yesterday that, after six years, he will be leaving the band. The band anticipates moving forward. This is the second loss of personnel for the band. Former lead singer Chris Stapleton left to concentrate on songwriting shortly before the release of the band's second album Reckless. Former Mercury Records recording artist Gary Nichols replaced him. Below is the letter from Henderson to fans of The Steeldrivers.
Dear Friends and Fans,
It sure has been a great six years, all the sold-out shows, great festivals and two grammy-nominated records of which I will always be very proud. This was all made possible by you, and I thank you from the bottom of a grateful heart. Now, for personal reasons which have nothing to do with my or my family's health or well being, the time has come for me to say goodbye. Don't worry I'll be around and you'll be hearing from me soon. I leave the SteelDrivers in the capable hands of my bandmates and I know they won't let us down as they move forward. I'll always cherish the wonderful memories of getting to meet so many of you great folks. Thanks again and may God bless you all.
Peace & Love,
Mike Henderson

Tanya Tucker And Sunny Sweeney Each Release New Holiday Singles

Legend Tanya Tucker and Sunny Sweeney each individually released new holiday singles this week.

Tucker's "Merry Christmas Wherever You Are" is the perfect soundtrack for the American Holiday Season. Christmas has always been Tanya's favorite holiday and plans on putting together a full length Christmas record next year.

Tanya offers, "With so many troops deployed overseas and with the economy being such that people are having to relocate to find work, recording this track was a very personal and emotional experience. Also, when I recorded that vocal, I was thinking of all the parents who had missing children and all the children who no longer had a parent to share this very special time."

The new Tucker single can be streamed partially here.

Sweeney's isn't as warm and fuzzy but no less interesting. She has released "One More Christmas Beer" on her Republic Nashville music label.

Says Sweeney, "Hey!! Is your family crazy?? Do you "really" enjoy the holidays? LOL... Well, we wrote a little XMAS song called "One More Christmas Beer" to cheers to all the dysfunction going on in this world... My family members names have NOT been changed to protect the innocent... LOL Buy yourself a copy and buy one for granny too.

Jo Dee Messina Launches New Website For Working Moms

Singer/songwriter and Curb Records recording artist Jo Dee Messina has launched a brand new website called The Fumbling Mom dedicated to sharing the advice she's learning along the way being a new mother.

According to Messina, "I got pregnant in 2008 - I was clueless, unprepared and had no idea what was about to come my way. Until then, my decisions were about picking the right song, who to write with, what musicians to carry on the road and deciding on how many tour dates a year we should strive for. I still have to make those decisions today but I also have to figure out which of my son’s outfits are appropriate for todays weather. What, besides cheese, will he eat for dinner and is it really safe to let him play with that hammer.

My husband and I were married in 2007. We moved in together and began to live our lives. Me and him - our own little union. Just as we were getting situated into married life, getting the system down, learning each others idiosyncrasies - we found out we were expecting. It was a shocker. I mean, we both wanted kids but couldn’t help to wonder, “Now God?” That little “plus sign” on the pregnancy test hit us like a ton of bricks. We were in disbelief - Why now? How are we going to do this? What about my career? This wasn’t part of the plan !

I didn’t see myself as the “motherly“ type. Growing up. I was never the girly-girl who played house and had dreams of the large, fairy tale wedding with 2.5 kids and a dog. I was raised around Northeast Italian men who taught me to speak your peace or never be heard from. I was a tomboy - I rode motorcycles and worked on cars. In high school, my wardrobe staples were jeans and work boots rather than blouses and dresses.

My career was music and my life was my career. I was performing 3 to 5 nights a week by the age of 13. From then on most every decision I made was concerned with my career. Music became my identity and I became very good at the business of music. There was no room in my life to be a mom until that day in 2008 when my husband and I found out we were expecting. At that moment I knew things had to change.

This website is about my journey in being a mom. A look into the balance of a career driven woman who still raises her kids with patience, kindness and integrity. Every child is different and each day is a new adventure. Some things I know, MOST things I don’t. But, I’m figuring it out, I’m doing my very best. I just hope I don’t screw this up."
