A quick look in the Twitter-verse yesterday unveiled an exciting new project from longtime country music veteran and guitar-playing extraordinaire Steve Wariner. Wariner is in the studio with fellow guitar whiz and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Duane Eddy working on a new project that at this point, is simply tagged with the hashtag of #twang.
For those unfamiliar with Eddy's work, note that in the late 1950s and early 1960s he had a string of hit records produced by Lee Hazlewood which were noted for their characteristically "twangy" sound, including "Rebel Rouser", "Peter Gunn", and "Because They're Young". He had sold 12 million records by 1963 and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, and the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in 2008. On April 5, 2000, at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee, the title "Titan of Twang" was bestowed upon Eddy by the mayor. The connection between the two just might be one Chet Atkins as Eddy's favored guitar is a Chet Atkins Gretsch 6120. Wariner was one of only four guitar players in the world to be given the "Certified Guitar Player" (CGP) award by Chet Atkins (five including Atkins himself, the others being: John Knowles (guitarist), Jerry Reed, and Tommy Emmanuel).
