Jackin' Around Podcast- Episode 28 - Jack Ingram Interviews Kelly Willis

Jack Ingram's career spans over four decades and includes 18 records, 6 top #20 singles, including a #1 hit on the Country Billboard charts. Jack has taken home awards, including CMT Music Video of the year, ACM New Male Artist, ACM Song of the Year, and two Grammy nominations, including the 2022 Best Country Album, "The Marfa Tapes" (Jack Ingram I Jon Randall I Miranda Lambert). Additionally, Jack hosts the nationally syndicated "Texas Music Scene" show, a half-hour weekly program in over 70 US markets, and has won 22 Telly awards and 2 People's Choice awards. Jack has a passion for children's charities, as proved by his joint fundraising effort with legendary Coach Mack Brown and Academy Award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey (MJM).  Since 2013, MJM has hosted the biggest names in music and raised nearly 20 million dollars for children's charities.

He also has hosted my Golf & Guitars Music Festival over the years, helping raise nearly a million and a half dollars to help veterans, disadvantaged youth and those with disabilities in Northern California. For that, I'll be forever grateful. This is is his (still relatively) new Jackin' Around Podcast.

This week's podcast guest is Kelly Willis.

A favorite with critics and the alt-country and Americana communities, Kelly Willis is a gifted singer and songwriter whose vocals can move from sunny clarity to passionate grit depending on the needs of the tune. Willis launched her recording career in 1990 with the album Well Travelled Love, but she first hit her creative stride with the 1999 independent release What I Deserve. Since then, Willis has carved out a comfortable niche writing and recording at her own relaxed pace, often in collaboration with her spouse, Bruce Robison (2013's Cheater's Game and 2014's Our Year), while 2002's Easy and 2007's Translated from Love were fine examples of her talent and charm.

This week's podcast guest is Texan, Randy Rogers.

The Randy Rogers Band recorded its debut album, Live at Cheatham Street Warehouse, at a music hall of the same name in San Marcos, Texas. By 2002, the band was signed to the independent Downtime record label, on which they released the album Like It Used to Be.  It was around this time that the band began performing outside of San Marcos, primarily at Nutty Brown Cafe and Amphitheatre in nearby Dripping Springs, Texas. Two years later, the album Rollercoaster was released, producing two minor entries on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts in early 2005.  Rogers also co-wrote "Somebody Take Me Home", a song recorded by Kenny Chesney, on his 2005 album, The Road and the Radio. Several of the songs on Rollercoaster were co-written by Radney Foster, who also co-produced the album.  Just a Matter of Time, the band's first major-label album, was released on Mercury Nashville Records in 2006.  The band also released their self-titled album on September 23, 2008, also on Mercury Nashville Records. The first single "In My Arms Instead", was released in August.

The band's fifth album, Burning the Day, was released on August 24, 2010, on MCA Nashville. The album's first single was "Too Late for Goodbye." It debuted at 55 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and after four weeks on the chart, it peaked at 47.

"One More Sad Song" was released in late 2012. The song became the band's first Billboard Top 40 hit, and the first single from their sixth album, Trouble.

Dreamer: A Tribute to Kent Finlay, released in 2016 on Austin-based Eight 30 Records, features Randy Rogers and Sunny Sweeney's duet "Between You and Me".

Jackin' Around Podcast- Episode 15 - Jack Ingram Interviews Reckless Kelly's Willy Braun

Jack Ingram has released ten studio albums, six live projects, and charted 12 singles on the Billboard Hot Country Charts, including a #1 hit, during his career. He recently won an ACM for Best Country Song in 2018 as co-writer of Miranda Lambert's "Tin Man," which was also nominated for a Grammy and a CMA award. He also has hosted my Golf & Guitars Music Festival over the years, helping raise nearly a million and a half dollars to help veterans, disadvantaged youth and those with disabilities in Northern California. For that, I'll be forever grateful. This is is his new Jackin' Around Podcast.

Understanding the virtuosity of Reckless Kelly requires the perspective of where the band has been. Cody and Willy Braun grew up in the White Cloud Mountains of Idaho. They moved to Bend, Oregon, and then migrated to that great musical fountainhead, Austin, Texas.

The band's co-founders and frontmen toured the country as part of their father's band, Muzzie Braun and the Boys, as children. They performed on The Tonight Show twice. Their father taught his four sons a professional ethic – integrity, persistence, hard work, and professionalism – honed over three generations. They overcame hardships, struggled for recognition, and learned the lessons of the trial and error that defined them.

In one sense, it's remarkable in the way of any musician, athlete, or businessperson who bucks the odds. In another, though, it's utterly natural that Reckless Kelly, born in the dreams of the two Braun brothers and their heritage but nurtured in the bumpy road of maturity, became the very essence of Americana music in all its far-flung glory.

"We came along in that second wave of the movement," Cody Braun says. "Son Volt's album Trace had a major effect on us. People like Joe Ely, Ray Kennedy, and Robert Earl Keen were always big supporters. Our goal was to make music that had a country vibe but a solid rock edge."

In the end, all the recipe required was to just add water. Water facilitates life. It enriches the soul. As Music Row magazine proclaimed, "In my perfect world, this is what country radio would sound like."

Jackin' Around Podcast- Episode 6 - Jack Ingram Interviews Ray Wylie Hubbard (Part 2 of 2)

For that, I'll be forever grateful. This is is his new Jackin' Around Podcast.

On this podcast, Jack interviews the legendary country-rocker Ray Wylie Hubbard. In the 1970s, Hubbard wrote “Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother,” first made famous by Jerry Jeff Walker’s 1973 recording.  In 1976, he signed with Warner Bros. Records.  The result was “a botched sound” that Hubbard disapproved of vehemently, but the album was released despite his attempts to block it.

Throughout the 80’s and ’90s, Hubbard recorded albums for various other labels but struggled with the sales of his mix of country, folk, and blues.  Eventually, a steady following began to re-discover Hubbard’s music, and he has been recording steadily since.  His guitar technique uses a strumming by the left (fretting) hand that is very old but not frequently seen in double time without changing the right-hand beat.

Since 2000, Hubbard has released ten records, including ‘Snake Farm’ in 2006.  Most recently, in 2020, Hubbard signed his first major-label release since 1978 on Big Machine Records.  ‘Co-Starring’ is a set of collaborations featuring Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh, Don Was, and Black Crowe’s frontman Chris Robinson.

This is the second of a two-part podcast.
