"What Country Song Makes You Cry?"
We'll start the ball rolling with a couple that, while not moving us to tears, certainly move us.
"Go Rest High On That Mountain" - Vince Gill (w/ Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs)
This song was a tribute that Vince wrote for his brother who had passed away, and then became a tribute to Keith Whitley. Note the "you were no stranger to the rain" line, which was a Keith Whitley song. "Go rest high on that mountain. Son, you work on earth is done. Go to heaven a shoutin' love for the Father and Son."
"Holes in the Floor of Heaven" - Steve Wariner
We witness three different events in a young man's life, as he loses his grandmother just before he turns eight, loses his wife, then at his daughter's wedding, misses his wife. All three times it rains, and we're told these are tears from the loved ones who wish they were with us. "And there's holes in the floor of heaven, and her tears are pouring down, that's how you know she's watching, wishing she could be here now."
Let's hear from YOU now... comment away.
Easy answer- Joe Diffie's 'You Made Me What I Am'- talking to his father about how much he means to him and then says at the end "I just came by to see your stone, Dad I miss you so much." It gets me every time.
ReplyDeleteHow Can I Help You Say Goodbye by Patty Loveless
ReplyDeleteWhere've You Been by Kathy Mattea
I Believe is such a beautiful song by Diamond Rio but
ReplyDeleteWhere've You Been by Kathy Mattea is a definite tear-jerker - it is the ultimate love song and so incredibly touching.
Skin by Rascall Flats
If You're Reading This by Tim McGraw
There is one more that I just can't remember. It is an old-time country western song about a cowboy on a cattle drive who is sweet to the rancher's daughter and one day there is a stampede caused when the blanket on her saddle slips. All the cows are charging toward the little girl and te cowboy rides out to save her. For a moment it looks like everyone is going to make it, but then she falls and he ends up sacrificing his life so that she can make it and it ends with his funeral. It is driving me crazy that I can't remember the name of that old song! If anyone does, PLEASE post it and I will check back!!!
"Galveston" by Glen Campbell.
ReplyDeleteJennifer- the song you asked about is Utah Carol by Marty Robbins:
ReplyDelete"And now my friends you've asked me what makes me sad and still
And why my brow is darkened like the clouds upon the hill
Run in your ponies closer and I'll tell to you my tale
Of Utah Carol my partner and his last ride on the trail
We rode the range together and rode it side by side
I loved him like a brother, and I wept when Utah died
We were rounding up one morning when work was almost done
When on his side the cattle started on a frightened run
Underneath the saddle that the boss's daughter rode
Utah that very morning had placed a bright red robe
So the saddle might ride easy for Lenore his little friend
And it was this red blanket that brought him to his end
The blanket was now dragging behind her on the ground
The frightened cattle saw it and charged it with a bound
Lenore then saw her danger and turned her pony's face
And leaning in the saddle tied the blanket to its place
But in leaning lost her balance, fell in front of that wild tide
"Lay still Lenore I'm coming" were the words that Utah cried
His faithful pony saw her and reached her in a bound
I thought he'd been successful, and raised her from the ground
But the weight upon the saddle had not been felt before
His backcinch snapped like thunder and he fell by Lenore
Picking up the blanket he swung it over his head
And started cross the prairie, "Lay still Lenore" he said
When he got the stampede turned and saved Lenore his friend
He turned to face the cattle and meet his fatal end
His six gun flashed like lightning, the report rang loud and clear
As the cattle rushed and killed him he dropped the leading steer
On his funeral morning I heard the preacher say
I hope we'll all meet Utah at the roundup far away
Then they wrapped him in a blanket that saved his little friend
And it was this red blanket that brought him to his end"
George Jone's "He stop loving her today".
ReplyDeleteThat is it! Thank you!!! Such a pretty (and sad) song! (Now I will have to go find it and listen to it)

also a song that isn't really a sad song but just hits a nerve with me is:
Drive by Alan Jackson (I guess being a daddy's girl the last verse is special to me)
1. "Jacob's Dream" by Alison Krauss & Union Station nearly knocked me off my chair at their concert back in 2006.
ReplyDelete2. Down from Dover - Dolly Parton
