Deep Cut Challenge Making The Rounds Around Country Music

Tim McGraw decided to create his own internet web challenge called the #DeepCutsChallenge. He first posted a video over the weekend explaining that all artists have a song they love to sing or jam out to when alone, even if it may not be a very popular song to perform. These songs are more commonly referred to as "deep cuts" or songs on an album that never made it to radio and are therefore not very well known or popular.

McGraw sang his favorite song "Take the Long Way Home" by John Schneider and then nominated Brad Paisley, Jason Aldean, and Kenny Chesney to sing one of their favorite "deep cuts" and post it to Instagram while tagging other artists to also participate. It's gone on to include the likes of Morgan Wallen, Luke Combs, Vince Gill & more.  Here's a collection of some of the performances and the songs they chose- click on the song title to watch/hear the performances.

And keep an eye on Faith Hill's Instagram account this week. She was the most recent to be nominated by Vince Gill...

Friday Five: Getting Dirty

“Life is made up of marble and mud.”- Nathaniel Hawthorne

Okay, minds out of the gutter everybody. It’s not that kind of getting dirty. We’re talking about mud. You know the kind. It’s the stuff you made pies out of as a kid. It’s the stuff that you pay insanely exorbitant prices to bath in hoity toity places like Napa and Calistoga. It’s the stuff guys everywhere hoped to see pretty girls wrestling in during college.

You would think that the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band would have some songs about mud. Alas, their song list including the word mud is clean as a whistle. Had we been able to expand beyond country music, we could have included such as artists as legendary bluesman Muddy Waters, Tom Petty’s Mudcrutch and rock's own Puddle of Mud. But That Nashville Sound is all about the big umbrella of country music so without further adieu, here’s this Friday’s Five about getting down and dirty in mud.

5. “Mississippi Mud”- Heartland

Heartland’s sole hit remains the sticky sweet “I Loved Her First” off of the same titled 2006 album. That song went all the way to number one but this little dirty number was never released as a single. The Heartland boys sing a common theme about their high school mates moving away but something about the Delta running through their veins keeps them home. “Somehow I think I fell in love with this Mississippi mud.” It’s a slightly different take on a common theme. But hey, it is about mud.

4. “Mud”- Guy Clark

Off of his 2002 album The Dark, this poetic little tribute to connecting with Mother Nature down by the creek is all things mud. Guy wants to get it between his toes and even be buried in it when he dies. “Mud pie/ Mud in your eye/ Mud on a snake bite don't you die/ Take a little rain, take a little dirt/ Make a little mud get it on your shirt.” The song was written with Buddy Mondlock- here’s his humorous story on writing with Guy and his take on the song.

3. “Stuck In The Mud”- Sean Patrick McGraw

McGraw is a former Nashville Star semi-finalist who is best known for his rowdy live shows and his song “Dollar Ain’t Worth A Dime” that got some play on CMT this last year. This track is off his 2005 album release called Songs for Saturday Night. It’s an uptempo rocking country tune that uses mud as analogy for not getting off your butt and doing what you need to do in life. McGraw opened several dates for Toby Keith and Trace Adkins this last year, so it looks as if his own career is getting rolling and unstuck as well.

2. “Muddy Water”- Trace Adkins

It seems as redemption is found within the mud as well. Trace Adkins’ big hit from his 2008 album, X, has him asking for baptism in the muddy waters of home. The song came out just after Adkins had finished his Celebrity Apprentice gig with Donald Trump and features Stephen Baldwin in the music video. The video’s strong, but what’s stronger is this performance below at the Grand Ole Opry backed by a church choir.

1. “Mud On The Tires”- Brad Paisley

Released off of his 2003 album of the same name, this song spawned Brad Paisley's 3 day mega music festival entitled Muddstock '04. According to reports, and the music video, the mud was deep and the slinging was crazy. Not only did mud get on the tires, but also on Brad, the band, the stage, the guitars, the cars, the girls, and everything else that happened to be there that weekend. That’s why, on a list of muddy songs, it takes the cake. Or maybe it takes the mud pie…

Restless Heart's Larry Stewart To Release Solo Album Shifting Gears On September 7

Artist: Larry Stewart
Album: Shifting Gears
Label: Breezewood Productions
Release Date: 9/7/18

Larry Stewart is probably best known for his role as lead singer of the country pop band Restless Heart but during his time during the 1990's, he released four solo albums as well. Number five will be forthcoming in September and will be titled Shifting Gears.

Stewart went to social media to announce his first single will be titled “What’s That Cowgirl See In Me” and will be released this Friday.

Restless Heart first signed a recording contract with RCA Records in 1984 and with the release of their first album in 1985, the vocal style of Restless Heart became instantly identifiable – an intertwining five part harmony led by Larry Stewart, with Dave Innis on keyboards, Greg Jennings on lead guitar, Paul Gregg on bass and drummer, John Dittrich.

They brought a new, contemporary sound to Nashville, a sound with a touch of pop – the sound which so strongly influences popular country acts of today like Brad Paisley, Rascal Flatts and Little Big Town.

Gold became the standard for the group with the release of their self-titled album. Three more gold albums followed between 1986 and 1991. With an additional six albums released through the years, Restless Heart put 26 hits on the country charts with six #1 hits and nine others in the Top Ten. Cross-over success, rare in the music world, was also theirs with six songs making the adult contemporary charts, including taking the #1, #2 and #3 spots.

Tribute Album To Honor Roger Miller Recruits Brad Paisley, Eric Church, Kacey Musgraves, Willie Nelson, Dozens More

Artist: Multiple
Album: King of the Road: A Tribute to Roger Miller
Label: BMG
Release date: August 31

King of the Road: A Tribute to Roger Miller, out Aug. 31 via BMG, pays long overdue respects to one of American music's premier entertainers and songwriters. The two-disc collection contains new renditions of Miller's songs by Ringo Starr, Dolly Parton, Eric Church, Loretta Lynn, John Goodman and more than two dozen others, including Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson and Merle Haggard on one track. Produced by Miller's son, Dean Miller, and Colby Barnum Wright, 'King of the Road' offers a fresh look at the work of a creative giant who has been gone 26 years but whose genius continues to shape contemporary music in ways both overt and subtle.

Before Miller's premature death of cancer at age 56, the Country Music Hall of Famer had 31 Top 40 Billboard country hits (10 of which crossed over to the pop chart), including his signature songs "Dang Me" and "King of the Road." He held the record for most GRAMMY wins in a single night until Michael Jackson and 'Thriller' broke it in 1984. Miller wrote songs and voiced a character for Walt Disney's 1973 Robin Hood film. He also wrote the music and lyrics for the Tony-winning Big River, helping launch the career of actor John Goodman, who reprises the musical's "Guv'ment" on 'King of the Road.' As Dean Miller writes in liner notes accompanying 'King of the Road,' "Roger Miller was too gigantic to be contained by genres and definitions."

'King of the Road' includes versions of Miller's biggest '60s hits, like "Chug-A-Lug" (Asleep at the Wheel ft. Huey Lewis) and "England Swings" (Lyle Lovett), and lesser-known treasures from a catalog full of gems. As with Miller's own output, the album contains plenty of unexpected turns -- country superstar Eric Church's playful take on Robin Hood's "Oo De Lally," for instance, or Starr's selection of "Hey, Would You Hold It Down?," a song from Miller's long-out-of-print 1979 'Making a Name for Myself' album. By any standard of measurement, Miller was "one of the greatest songwriters that ever lived" -- even if he did say so himself. And he did, in the first of a handful of the album's live-performance interstitials that capture the spontaneous wit of a mind that operated at a breakneck pace.

The scope of material and performances on 'King of the Road' both capture Miller's personality and convey an astonishing legacy that's still felt today. "Roger Miller didn't have to say much," Dean writes in the liners. "You were simply drawn to him. He had a magnetic smile, and electric wit and a passion for life and music that transcended generations."

Lindsay Ell Announces Tribute To John Mayer With Upcoming 5/25 Release, The Continuum Project

Artist: Lindsay Ell
Album: The Continuum Project
Label: BBR Music Group
Release date: May 25, 2018

Guitar wunderkind Lindsay Ell will release her version of John Mayer’s Continuum album on Friday, May 25. Lindsay Ell’s The Continuum Project, co-produced and co-engineered by Ell, will be available at all digital retailers and streaming services.

Beginning as a homework assignment from producer Kristian Bush (Sugarland) in preparation to record her debut album, Ell was given two weeks to reimagine her all-time favorite desert island record, recording every single instrument and singing every part alone in her studio. The process led her to emerge with a renewed creative discovery and vision for how she plays, writes and records her own music. The end-result of Bush’s unique assignment became her critically-lauded No. 1 debut album, The Project.

Ell explains, “Recording Continuum was the thing that started it all. Kristian taught me some of the most valuable lessons as my producer from this ‘homework’ assignment. He gave me three rules: I needed to play all the instruments myself, I needed to record it alone in my studio, and I had two weeks. Through it all, I remembered all the things I first loved about making music. I can’t wait for my fans to hear the music that helped shaped ‘Criminal’ and The Project!”

The whirlwind doesn’t stop for Ell who just wrapped a year-long run on Brad Paisley’s Weekend Warrior World Tour. Meanwhile, the multi-instrumentalist is set to join Sugarland’s Still the Same Tour in July ahead of supporting select dates of Keith Urban’s Graffiti U World Tour this fall.

Adding to the excitement, Ell collaborated with Urban on a brand new track “Horses,” featured on his just-released album Graffiti U, available everywhere now

Legendary Songwriter Darrell Scott Preps Live at the Station Inn For November Release

Artist: Darrell Scott
Album: Live at the Station Inn
Label: Soundly Music
Release date: November 17, 2017

The project in the legendary (Travis Tritt, Brad Paisley, Dixie Chicks, Faith Hill, Darryl Worley, Guy Clark) songwriter's own words:

"The Station Inn is a little cinder block tavern that has hosted more casual Bluegrass nights of music than any place on earth. That little tavern is still standing with all the Olympic-panic buildings towering over - (look closely at Gabriel Scott's great photo of the Station Inn at night...my son - there it is in black and white). Every time I drive by the place I wonder if it is the last time I will see it standing."

"So, with a 4 piece that had played a few gigs together in the touring summer, we had not played for months when we played this night in December with Christmas around the corner...hark.
Here is Shad Cobb on fiddle, Matt Flinner on banjo and mandolin, Bryn Davies on bass, and me. ALL playing on the edge of our wits and not knowing whether we will collapse in the next moment or soar above the tall buildings surrounding us. And playing in a place where our heroes have stood and delivered. (Friend, Odessa Settles, joins us on a song as she was sitting in the audience...very Station Inn)."

"To me live music is to have that edge, that little (or big) threat of the unknown waiting around every corner - and still, with complete faith in our fellow band members (and maybe some blind faith in ourselves) that we may actually be able to do this. I believe the audience feels and sees and hears that edge. No hiding. Music in the moment."

Track listing:

1. I Don't Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Have Met)
2. With a Memory Like Mine
3. Spanish Is the Loving Tongue
4. Family Tree
5. Urge for Going
6. The Open Door
7. Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
8. Jesus Was a Capricorn
9. Helen of Troy, Pa
10. River Take Me

New Music Video From Brad Paisley (and Johnny Cash) - "Gold All Over The Ground"

Brad Paisley has shared a special music video of a track off of his just-released album, Love & War — and this one a song fifty years in the works. Adapted from a poem written by Johnny Cash in 1967 to June Carter Cash, “Gold All Over the Ground” finds one country star paying tribute to another with a poignant love song.

Johnny and June's son, John Carter Cash, had collected these previously unpublished pieces for a new poetry book that came out this year and brought one to Paisley who put it to music. The song opens with audio snippets of Cash's voice introducing wife June Carter and, at the end of the track, proclaiming that she helped save his life. The poem, anchored by the line, "If you're ever down, I'd give you rows of roses and gold all over the ground," was first published in Cash's posthumous 2016 collection Forever Words.
