On July 6, 2015, a collection of music's legendary outlaws and rising superstars came together for a once-in-a lifetime concert in Austin, Texas, to celebrate the life of country music legend Waylon Jennings. The show is now available as the Outlaw: Celebrating the Music of Waylon Jennings CD/DVD, including concert performances by Chris Stapleton, Shooter Jennings, Jessi Colter, Bobby Bare, Lee Ann Womack, Buddy Miller, Sturgill Simpson, Kacey Musgrave, Jamey Johnson, Robert Earl Keen, Kris Kristofferson, Ryan Bingham, Alison Krauss, Toby Keith, Eric Church, and Willie Nelson.

Grammy Award-winner Don Was served as co-music director and led an all-star band backing the performers at this concert event. Legendary music producer Buddy Cannon also served as co-music director. “Waylon Jennings was my friend, brother, and musical soul mate”, said Willie Nelson. “Playing his songs with these incredible artists, is going to be one hell of a concert event.”

On Friday, April 7, 2017, the two-hour broadcast premiere will air on CMT at 10 pm ET/PT

Legacy Recordings, a division of Sony Music Entertainment, will release The Psalms, an all-new album from American country music legend Jessi Colter, on March 24, 2017. With lyrics drawn from timeless and sacred poems, these spiritual and personal recordings are spontaneous musical interpretations of the Old Testament songs attributed to the shepherd/poet/musician David. The Psalms is the first new album of Jessi Colter studio music since the release of the artist's Out Of The Ashes in 2006.

The core tracks for The Psalms--featuring Colter (piano and voice) and Lenny Kaye (electric and acoustic guitar)--were recorded at Dubway studios in Manhattan during two sessions (February 16-17, 2007 and January 4-5, 2008) nearly a decade ago. On The Psalms, the original tracks have been augmented with musical contributions from a variety of artists including Bobby Previte (drums, cymbals, tympani, triangle), Al Kooper (Hammond organ), Paul Dugan (arco bass), Mia Theodoratus (harp), John Jackson (mandolin, violin), Jenni Muldaur (background vocals), Jesse Lauter (mellotron), Black Sea Hotel (Willa Roberts, Sarah Small, Shelley Thomas) (background vocals).

In his enlightening liner notes and exegesis of The Psalms, penned especially for this release, Lenny Kaye recalls "One morning in 1995, while working with Waylon Jennings (Jessi's husband) on his autobiography in Nashville, I came into the living room to find Jessi Colter at the piano, singing the Psalms. She would place her fingers on the keys, forming simple chords and expressing melodies as they came to her. There was no forethought, no conception of composition; only the intuitive expression of the spirituality behind these most ancient of sacred poems, the divinity they wellspring within each of us. I listened transfixed while she paged through the Old Testament, choosing each Psalm, finding within them the emotive voice of the Shepherd Boy, the Warrior, ultimately the King that is David. It was one of the most beautiful expressions of belief I had ever witnessed."

"In the early months of 2007 I secured a studio with a good piano. There was no rehearsal. We would select a Psalm. She sat behind the keyboard, gathered herself, and then began to sing. There were one, perhaps two takes of each. Sometimes I accompanied her on guitar. Over the years I decorated them with chosen musicians, careful not to disturb their intimacy or their moment of improvised creation and inspiration."

"I am thrilled to work with Lenny Kaye and sing King David's Psalms, the most creative music I've ever done," says Jessi,  "...and the greatest challenge!"

Colter is an iconic American country music artist whose career began in the 1960s when, encouraged by her first husband, the mythic rock guitarist Duane Eddy ("Rebel Rouser"), she composed hit songs for Dottie West, Nancy Sinatra, Hank Locklin and others. Perhaps best-known for her musical collaborations with her second husband, Waylon Jennings, she rocketed to the top of the charts with her country-pop crossover hit "I'm Not Lisa" in 1975. In 1976, her contributions to the platinum-selling album Wanted: The Outlaws secured her place in American musical history as the premier bad-ass woman artist in the male-dominated "outlaw country music" sphere. She has fifteen major-label albums to her credit, and her songs and records have sold in the tens of millions.

Although he'd claimed in 1970, following poor record sales and a bad relationship with his then label RCA, that he was retiring from music, in 1972 Willie Nelson moved to Austin and became part of the bourgeoning hippie-country scene then exploding in the Texan capital. His popularity in Austin soared as he played his own brand of country music, marked additionally by folk and jazz influences, so Nelson decided to return to the recording business, and by February 1973, he was making his acclaimed Shotgun Willie at Atlantic Studios in New York. When Nelson, Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, and Johnny Cash formed The Highwaymen in the mid-1980s, they achieved platinum record sales and toured the world.

All four Highwaymen - along with Jessi Colter and B.B. King - appeared at the 1984 New Year's Eve show now released for the first time on this 2 x CD set. Something of a spectacular and broadcast across numerous local stations throughout the southern states, this superb performance from Willie and co. set the ball rolling for what was to become an annual event in the Willie Nelson diary and one that still continues to this very day, with the 2015 event taking place on the televised Austin City Limits, with guests Kacey Musgraves and Willy's son Lukas Nelson with his group Promise Of The Real.

Outlaw Music Hall of Fame Unveils Its First Class Of Inductees

The first inductees into the new Outlaw Music Hall of Fame were announced yesterday in conjunction with the 1st annual Outlaws and Icons Charity Ride and Concert held in Altamont, Tennessee. Founded in August of 2013 as a grassroots effort, The Outlaw Music Hall of Fame is dedicated to those musicians and songwriters whose work best exemplifies the qualities of the Outlaw country movement that first began in the 1970s. 17 inductees will go in on the inaugural class under two different categories: Pioneers/Innovators (Pre-1970), and Highwaymen (1970-1990). The new museum also announced a third category called the Guardian Award. This award isn't a Hall of Fame induction, but a one-year honor that identifies the artist or group's work, commitment to their music and that they honor the music and traditions that came before them. This third award will be fan-voted in coming years. The initial inductees are:

The Hall of Fame will be dedicated to those artists, both musicians and songwriters, whose work best exemplifies the qualities of the Outlaw movement that first began in the 1970s and has gained renewed momentum as an alternative to the current Nashville pop country scene.  In doing so it will place the spotlight on music firmly attached to the roots of country.  Moreover, the Hall of Fame will educate the public about Outlaw country, memorialize founders of the genre—such as Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Jessi Colter—recognize current Outlaw artists, and provide a platform for them and for the independent record labels who currently have little if any voice in the industry. The facility encompasses more than 5,000 square feet and under the direction of architect Thomas Bartoo will feature a state-of-the-art layout, including interactive displays.  There will also be a studio to allow for live broadcasts to be streamed over the Internet.

Located right on the town square in Lynchburg, the Outlaw Music Hall of Fame will sponsor a concert series each April to November to showcase independent roots country artists. Along with the Hall of Fame, there will be established the Outlaw Music Association.  It will bring together independent artists, songwriters, and record executives to promote roots country.  It will also recognize accomplishments by each of these.

Johnny Cash Bootleg Album Number Four To Come Out April 3rd- New Unreleased Material Included

On what would have been Johnny Cash's 80th birthday year, Columbia/Legacy Records will be releasing a new collection of Cash tunes with Johnny Cash - Bootleg Vol. IV : The Soul of the Truth. The album focuses on songs of faith recorded in the 1970's and 1980's. It's a 2-CD, 51 track collection that gathers released and previously unreleased studio material recorded in Nashville and The House of Cash in Hendersonville, Tennessee. The album included all twenty songs on A Believer Sings The Truth plus:

•5 Outtakes from A Believer Sings The Truth sessions
•Entire 12-song previously unreleased album recorded in 1975
•Entire 10-song, out-of-print album Johnny Cash-Gospel Singer, recorded 1982, plus 4 previously unreleased outtakes

It includes duets and collaborations with June Carter Cash, Rosanne Cash, Cindy Cash, Anita Carter, Helen Carter, Rodney Crowell, Jessi Colter, and others.

Legendary Studio Musician & Steel Guitarist Ralph Mooney Passes

Ralph Mooney, a pioneering studio musician and tourning musician- known for his incredible steel guitar playing on numerous country classics in the 1960s and 1970s- died over the weekend at his home in Arlington, Texas, of complication from cancer. He was 82.

Ralph Mooney was one of the true steel guitar innovators in country music. He was born in Duncan, OK, and first became interested in the instrument after hearing another steel pioneer, Leon McAuliffe. As a teenager in the '40s, Mooney moved to California, where he gradually developed his style by exhaustive playing with numerous bands, in both live and studio situations. In the '50s and '60s, Mooney was hired as a staff musician for Capitol Records, where he played on the early recordings of Buck Owens and is heard prominently on several Merle Haggard hits, including "Swinging Doors," "The Bottle Let Me Down," and "(All My Friends Are Gonna Be) Strangers." Throughout the years, Mooney left his mark on recordings by Wynn Stewart (that's his steel on "It's Such a Pretty World Today"), Warren Smith, Rose Maddox, Skeets McDonald, Bobby Austin, Bonnie Owens, Wanda Jackson, Donna Fargo, and Jessi Colter.

His longest running stint was with Waylon Jennings, whom Mooney joined in 1970 and stayed with until he retired in the early '90s. While Mooney is known mainly for his steel playing, he also dabbled in songwriting. His biggest hit was "Crazy Arms," which he co-wrote with Chuck Seals in the mid-'50s.

Even though Mooney spent most of his life playing on the recordings of others, he did release an instrumental album on Capitol Records in 1968 called Corn Pickin' and Slick Slidin' with guitarist James Burton.

Mooney had not performed often in recent years, but he was persuaded to record "Crazy Arms" on Marty Stuart's latest album, Ghost Train: The Studio B Sessions, a project that won a Grammy earlier this year. Mooney will be buried Wednesday (March 23) in Arlington.
