Margo Price Readies New Live Album Release Recorded At The Ryman For Release In December

Artist: Margo Price
Album: Perfectly Imperfect At The Ryman
Label: Loma Vista
Release date: December 4, 2020

In 2018, Margo Price claimed her rock star status at the Mother Church of Country Music. She was headlining the Ryman Auditorium for the first time ever, in a sold-out run of three nights that she had admittedly spent more time planning than her wedding. Now, Margo uses that run of show to build a new live album that revisits that career-changing residency with the release called Perfectly Imperfect at The Ryman. The album features special special guest appearances from Jack White, Emmylou Harris and Sturgill Simpson.

The album was originally released back in May to celebrate the second anniversary of the residency, but only exclusively through Bandcamp to generate donations for the MusiCares COVID-19 Relief Fund. The project will now be available digitally, on CD and on vinyl for the world to hear in December.

That Nashville Sound Sunday Newsbytes: New Albums From Clint Black & Will Hoge + New Music Videos

As the music business stands to lose up to 9 billion... that's a billion with a b, folks... from lost revenue from concert ticket sales, it's left the industry reeling. With album sales at an all-time low, streaming revenues that are a joke to the artists, and now concerts all in limbo, now is the time to support your favorite artists. Buy a shirt. Buy some vinyl. Show some support. Heaven knows they need it now more than ever.

~ That Nashville Sound favorite Will Hoge will release his new self-produced project, Tiny Little Movies, on June 26 via Thirty Tigers. It is "a throwback rock and roll splendor, setting the tone well for an album in which Hoge chose to highlight the raw chemistry of his road band. After tackling the arrangements over four days in an East Nashville rehearsal space, Hoge, guitarist Thom Donovan, drummer Allen Jones, and bassist Christopher Griffiths headed into Trace Horse Studio and tracked each song live, together and inspired. “There’s a classic, rock & roll centerpiece to everything this band does, but it’s still a group of four different people, and we all bring different influences to the table,” says Hoge, who turned to Grammy-winning producer/engineer Matt Ross-Spang (Jason Isbell, Margo Price, Lori McKenna) to mix the album at Sam Phillips Recording. “We’ve got a metalhead in the group. We’ve got a Motown fan. We’ve got a guitarist who loves Johnny Marr. It’s a unique hodgepodge of sounds coming together, and we tried to accentuate that.”"

~ Clint Black will release his 23rd album called Out of Sane on June 19. "Out of Sane is made up of all original songs, except for one cover. I recorded it with a varied collection of musicians; some from my band and some with session players. I believe it’s one of my best albums ever and I think my fans will love it. They’ve been asking for new music for a while and I’m thrilled to finally be able to deliver after five years since the last studio album,” said Black.

Barnes & Noble Quietly Developing Unique Vinyl Exclusive Projects

The largest brick and mortar book retailer in the country has been expanding past their core business for some time- adding cafe's into their stores and having a push to rebrand Barnes & Noble as more than just a bookstore by expanding its offerings of toys, games, gadgets and other gifts and reshaping the nation’s largest bookstore chain into a “lifestyle brand.”

This includes a vast collection of exclusive vinyl projects including reissues as well as exclusive distributions of new album introductions as well. This isn't just some fad. According to a recent Billboard story, "The comeback of vinyl records, covered just a half-decade ago as a wacky trend, is now a bona fide business story: vinyl accounted for $182 million in sales in the first half of 2017, according to the RIAA. And although the format represents a small percentage of unit sales, revenue from deluxe packages means that it accounts for 29 percent of revenue from physical retail."  Yep- you read that right: 29 percent of revenue from store music sales are coming from vinyl. Sony Records announced earlier this year that they were getting back into the vinyl business after a 28-year break.

As a result, Barnes and Noble has made exclusive agreements with several of the labels and music distributors and developed unique projects that only their stores will be selling this holiday season. What can music aficionados add to their Christmas lists from exclusive vinyl offerings from this retailer?  Here's just a sampling of some of the ones that caught this reader's eye.

- Johnny Cash - Greatest!  This Sun Records classic record has been reissued and has been pressed on a unique distinctive white vinyl.

- Johnny Cash & Jerry Lee Lewis- Sunday Down South - This collaborative album was originally released in 1970 and will be re-released exclusively on vinyl from B&N.

-  Willie Nelson - Willie and the Boys - Willie's upcoming release featuring a collaboration with his two sons will be released exclusively through the retailer.

- Alison Krauss - Windy City
- Robert Plant - Carry Fire
- Margo Price - All-American Made
- John Mellencamp - Sad Clowns and Hillbillies
- Urban Cowboy Soundtrack
- Marty Stuart - Way Out West

That Nashville Sound Friday Newsbytes - New Projects From Margo Price, Eric Palsay, Thomas Rhett, Marc Cohn & Pistol Annies

Today is National Get Gnarly day. I'm sure those in charge naming it had intentions of just encouraging Ray Wylie Hubbard to get out his slide and do some picking.  On a separate note, there's lots more news this morning with some exciting album announcements.

- Marc Cohn has announced a new album to come out in early 2018 and has gone to PledgeMusic to offer fans some unique opportunities at autographed and custom memorabilia connected to the project.

- Save your Christmas money, for in early 2018, the Pistol Annies will be having their third album released.

- The final studio album from the late rocker Gregg Allman, titled Southern Blood, will release via Rounder Records on Sept. 8. The torchbearer for Southern rock died earlier this year on May 27, at the age of 69, at his home near Savannah, Georgia.

- Margo Price had a surprise EP released yesterday. Price offers up four new tracks on her EP Weakness, released via Third Man Records.

- Michael Johnson, the voice behind the smash hit "Bluer Than Blue," passed away at age 72 while in hospice care in Minneapolis on Tuesday, July 25.

- The Voice veteran Jake Worthington released a new lyric music video for "Big Time Lonesome."

- Eric Paslay released a surprise EP as well this last week entitled The Work Tapes. Listen to him talk about the new project a bit here.

- Shania Twain released her new music video for "Life's About To Get Good."

- On September 8, Thomas Rhett will release his next album Life Changes via Valory Records. "I am and will always be a country artist,” Thomas Rhett said. "It's who I am, it's in my blood. I will always try to push boundaries because that rebellious side has been in me since I was a kid. My voice and my journey that inspired these songs is the glue that makes this album cohesive. This is where I'm at musically, and these are my stories."

Margo Price, Kris Kristofferson And Dolly Parton Join Adele And Others On Brandi Carlile's Benefit Album

Album: Cover Stories: Brandi Carlile Celebrates 10 Years of the Story (An Album To Benefit War Child)
Label: Columbia
Release date: May 5, 2017

Nearly everything you need to know about this project is in the foreword that former President Barack Obama wrote for the album. He said, "As an artist, Brandi Carlile is using her talent on behalf of the most vulnerable among us, children living in areas of conflict. She reminds us that, together, we can build for our children a more just, peaceful world."

Carlile has collected covers of many of her songs from her heroes, artists who are fans of hers and mutual fans of one-another and put together an album in which 100% of the proceeds will end up going to benefit War Child.

In Carlile's own words:
Do you remember Sunday school? Goliath was a giant, he was undefeated, menacing and a paralyzing presence in his time. Goliath is our refugee crisis and the apathy it breeds. In particular, this giant is most devastating in that it is destroying the lives of the truly innocent, the hope of the world - children.
To quote Barack Obama – “These children are no less curious, hopeful and worthy of love than our own”. Instinctually, we understand this with such sobering clarity that it paralyzes us, frozen in the realization that Goliath might just be too big.
I am not big, or tall, or rich, or very powerful at all, are you? I close my eyes at the movies and although I’ve dreamed of being a singer my whole life, I’ve never really wanted or achieved monumental fame. I’ve lived in proximity to it for long enough though to know that The Story might be the biggest rock I’ll ever get my hands on and that’s more than enough for me. The Story is our rock, I’ve never had much of an arm though… and this story isn’t about me.
You are David.
Be David.

That Nashville Sound Sunday Newsbytes

I've been on the road this week so I'm sorry for the lighter-than-normal battery of new posts. But in my absence, there's been lots of great new album announcements and a couple of other nuggets that are important to share. So here you go, a special TNS Newsbyte Sunday feature.

* I feel blessed to be included with some names I admire a lot as one of the 89 writers that contribute to Nashville Scene's 17th Annual Country Music Critics' Poll. This marks about a decade I've contributed and the results are always really remarkable. This year was decidedly a female-dominated affair with names like Brandy Clark, Miranda Lambert, Margo Price, Maren Morris and Lori McKenna making their mark at the top of some of the lists.  Click HERE to read the series of feature articles.

Unpublished was my take on the rewards and frustrations of writing for country music. My take: "I can’t help but draw some comparisons to country music and the political cheese grater that all of the nation went through over the last year. Even without being a political science major, I can see how much of our nation’s left and right have wrapped themselves up in “their sides” of political ideology and come hell or high water, defend that corner vehemently and blindly without analysis or thoughtful discussion. Both sides rip the other to shreds without stopping to provide context and critique to issues, agendas and policies. Unfortunately, I think the short-attention span Twitter-verse that we live in today has created much of that same lack of careful analysis of music in general. As a result, listeners wrap themselves up with just what’s heard on the radio dial or just a sub-genre like honkytonk, bluegrass, traditional country or Red Dirt music and claim it’s the best around while disparaging all other kinds of country music. With fewer and fewer places that are taking the time to provide true careful deconstruction of all kinds of songs, it becomes easier to criticize the person doing the critique rather than contribute to the conversation. The reality is that no matter where you sit on the country music spectrum, there’s good music being released and there’s stuff that’s not very good. Our job as bloggers and music critics is to search it out and provide a healthy place for discourse on it without simply regurgitating the PR machines. Finding that place in the middle seems harder and harder to do these days and there’s fewer places on the web that are doing it well."

* Dukes of Hazzard star and country music singer John Schneider has a brand new album out this week inspired by his beloved studio ranch in South Louisiana that was hit by the devastating floods and the community that bounced back and helped like a "phoenix rising from the ashes." This album was recorded in his flooded home, where friends from all over appeared to help.

“This is really the first time that the music that I’m doing is representative of life rather than thinking ‘Oh, this is a good song,” he insists. “I’ve lived every one of these songs, so it’s an entirely different kind of an album. People’s responses have been great. I guess they are hearing a truth. I don’t guess there is any such thing as ‘the’ truth, but there is a truth, and it’s ringing true.”

On his new song "How Do You Stop The Water:" “You don’t realize it until you’ve actually cut the song, but when I listened to it back – I recorded the song just a few minutes after I found out my mother had passed away. So, there’s something very tangible about the sorrow in that song – but when I heard the song back, I thought ‘I would put this song up with ‘he Stopped Loving Her Today,’ ‘Miss Emily’s Picture,’ or ‘Live Like You Were Dying.’ I think it’s that kind of a song. It’s an experience. It’s not just a tune.”

* Former One Flew South member and singer/songwriter Chris Roberts performed an incredible dedication to the late George Michael at his St. Augustine's Episcopal Church in Nashville. Roberts' solo The Way West was one of our favorite albums of 2015 and this cover of "They Won't Go When I Go" shows just how versatile and interpretive this former Broadway star can be. Listen to the captured live track HERE.

* The SteelDrivers are back in the studio recording their next project. Hear a snippet HERE.

* March 10 is the long-awaited release date for Josh Turner's long-delayed sixth studio album, Deep South.

“I’m really proud of this album,” says Turner. “It was really important for me to expand creatively and explore in new ways for this record. The way I pick songs is different now. There are so many things in my life and career that have matured me as an artist.” He adds, “I’ve had another child since my last project!”

* One of That Nashville Sound's very-favorite artists (and people) is Jason Eady and we're thrilled with the announcement that he'll be releasing his next singer/songwriter self-titled project on April 21 via Thirty Tigers.

“At the beginning I told everyone I wanted to make a record where, if the power went out, we could still sit down and play all the songs the exact same way,” says Eady, who points out that steel guitar is the only electric instrument featured on the album.

“I’ve always been drawn to writing that’s got a simplicity to it, where you’re digging deep into real day-to-day life,” he notes. Here, that means touching on such matters as turning 40 (on the reflective, soul-stirring “40 Years”), his daughter’s growing up and going off to college (on the sweetly heartbreaking “Not Too Loud”), and the everyday struggle to “embrace the messy parts of life instead of trying to get the point where you’ve somehow fixed all your problems” (on “Rain,” a joyfully determined anthem featuring SteelDrivers fiddler Tammy Rogers). Throughout the album, Eady’s soulfully rugged voice blends in beautiful harmonies with his wife, singer/songwriter Courtney Patton. And on "No Genie in This Bottle," the legendary Vince Gill adds his harmony vocals alongside Eady.

“When you first get started making music, your ideas are grandiose and more about the big picture. But the longer I’ve done this, the more I’ve realized that the real joy comes from the process rather than the end goal,” he says. “Now it’s about getting better and finding more of myself with every album."

That Nashville Sound Friday Newsbytes

There's so much new news floating around over the last 24 hours, we're going to go The 9513/Engine 145 old-school and do a news round-up on everything happening to get it all in one column this morning.

Little Big Town is releasing a new album called The Breaker and February 24 and it's filled with songs co-penned by one of our favorite writers, Lori McKenna.

It appears that Josh Turner will have his long wait for a new album ended with a March 10 MCA Nashville release of a project called Deep South.

ABC/CMT's Nashville actress and musician Clare Bowen has released a new song called "Love Steps In" and all of the proceeds are being donated to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Nikki Lane has released a brand new music video for her song "Jackpot."

PBS will have Hayes Carll featured on Austin City Limits tomorrow night (1/21). Here's a performance of "Sake of the Song" if you can't wait.

Margo Price will be on that same episode with Carll. Here's her doing "Hands of Time." Check your local listings for time(s).

Cody Jinks was on Music City Roots earlier this week and here's his performance of "Hippies and Cowboys." Or if you prefer, his performance of "I'm Not The Devil."

Trio Lady Antebellum is back together after a year working on solo projects. They released their first single "You Look Good" yesterday which will be forthcoming off of their 6th studio album Heart Break being released on June 9.

"Somebody Else Will" is the brand new music video from Justin Moore. You can watch it here.

On the eve of the new President's inauguration, John Mellencamp has released a new politically-charged song called "Easy Target." Somewhat lost in that announcement, however, is the even-better news that he has a new collaborative album with Carlene Carter called Sad Clowns and Hillbillies coming out later this spring.

The impeccable Alison Krauss released the title track off her upcoming Buddy Cannon-produced project, Windy City.
