That Nashville Sound receives many different CD releases throughout the year from indie, bluegrass and artists just off the mainstream radar that we’re doing short mini CD reviews on. We call them That Nashville Soundbites- it’s a feature that will allow us to give some props to some albums and artists that deserve a spotlight on their work.
Release Date: April 2010
Music Label: E1 Records/Red Dirt Music
The Skinny: David Ball was one of the first country artists to take an independent record to the Country Top 5 for his 2002 record “Riding with Private Malone”, from the critically acclaimed Amigo. In 2005, he won a Grammy for his participation on Beautiful Dream – The Songs of Stephen Foster. This new release features Ball's unique combination of honky tonk and Western swing, pinches of old Nashville sound, and touches of blues and folk thrown in to make the new music a unique record among the masses that are being released this spring. And while his voice is personable and engaging, most of the song topics lack teeth. They’re pleasant, but don’t draw with any personal investment like “Private Malone” did eight years ago. Two terrific tracks are the melancholy tale of heartbreak “What’ll I Do If I Don’t Have You” and his best vocal on the album, “So Long.”
Sounds Like: Sammy Kershaw
Standout Tracks: "What’ll I Do If I Don’t Have You”, “So Long”
The Verdict: Two & A Half Stars Out Of Five
