Album: Cuttin' Grass: Vol 1 - The Butcher Shoppe Sessions
Label: High Top Mountain Records
Release Date: Today, Friday October 16
Sturgill Simpson is set to release a new 20-song bluegrass album, Cuttin’ Grass: Vol 1 – The Butcher Shoppe Sessions today.
The album was put together via a dare of sorts. While recovering from a vicious case of COVID-19, Simpson engaged in some social media fun and turned it into a fundraising opportunity for his favorite charities: the Special Forces Foundation, the Equity Alliance and MusiCares. He asked his fans to reach a donation goal with the promise that if hit, he would release a new album. They exceeded it. The best players in bluegrass were nearby, all unable to tour. A few phone calls later, a supergroup of bluegrass musicians was formed, and a three-day recording session was scheduled. This album is that result.
Sturgill revealed the album news via Instagram with an image of the album cover and the caption: “Welp,..was hoping to surprise everybody on Thursday but somebody somewhere (Germany) got all excited and just couldn’t hold their horses. Anyway,..’Cuttin’ Grass Vol. 1 – The Butcher Shoppe Sessions’ dropping 10/16 (midnight Thursday). And yes,..this is actually the album cover.”
Cuttin’ Grass consists of 20 songs from Sturgill’s past catalog, reimagined as bluegrass tunes. The new album will follow the release of Sturgill’s fourth studio album, Sound & Fury, which dropped in September 2019. Sturgill’s 2016 album, A Sailor’s Guide to Earth, won the Grammy for Best Country Album.
