Happy Birthday to Bing Crosby- he would have turned 106 today (he passed away back in 1977). While most people don’t consider Crosby country, he holds the honor of being the very first singer to have a song to top the newly introduced Country Music Billboard charts (then callled "Hillbilly and Western Singles") in early 1944. You can listen to Bing Crosby and The Andrews Sisters singing their million selling Pistol Packin' Mama, released in 1943 here…In great western music style, it’s a true story. Cherokee County Texas sheriff Bill Brunt was killed in a shootout with bootleggers in 1939. This song was written about his wife, Mary Brunt, who served out the remaining portion of his term with a pistol strapped to her side.
