
8 years later and less than two months after dying in a plane crash that also claimed Patsy Cline, Cowboy Copas and Randy Hughes, Hawkshaw Hawkins topped the country charts with a posthumous number one hit called “Lonesome 7-7203.” The song first appeared on the Billboard country chart on March 2, 1963- three days before he died. The song was absent from the charts for the two weeks following his death, but re-appeared on March 23 and spent 25 weeks on the chart, four of them at number one, an accomplishment that eluded him in life.
