In what was not a totally unexpected occurance, Country Music Television (CMT) hosted an awards show last night and a rock show broke out. Rapper T-Pain, the B-52's and Def Leppard all had prominent performances througout the night-making this viewer just wonder what the hell happened to what you would think is a country music show. Not that I don't like the B-52's (their album Cosmic Thing was one of the highlights of the 80's pop music scene) and Def Leppard (one of the best rock anthem bands of their generation). But neither is country music. And when you throw in the electric guitar-laden rock spectacles performed by Jason Aldean and Rascal Flatts, it left me flat. It left me longing for something more like the cutaway song cuts they did before they went to commercials at each break. Or Alan Jackson, Reba McEntire, George Strait, Brooks & Dunn- or really anything a bit more acoustic.
For those that missed it, or those that would like to see it again, here's some of the performances starting with the very creative opening video sequence to the show featuring Taylor Swift (rapping of course.)
