There's some fantastic news regarding some of country music's finest songwriters in Rodney Crowell and Cody Jinks that came out yesterday- to go along with a video podcast concert performance that's worth stopping what you're doing to sit down and watch. If you're not a fan of Drew Kennedy and Josh Grider, you most certainly will be after watching their great performance.
Grammy-winning roots troubadour Rodney Crowell announces the July 13th release of his new album, Acoustic Classics, the debut entry from his newly-launched imprint, RC1.
A creative powerhouse with no off switch, the acclaimed songwriter, musician, author and poet is adding yet another title to his already esteemed pedigree; label head. As prolific today as he was in his twenties, Crowell has released six albums in the last ten years. Next on deck is a re-distilled, acoustic presentation of 12 tunes from his 40-plus-year career in a truly intimate setting. “With the help of some of my favorite musicians, I’ve made all acoustic instrument recordings of ten of my most recognizable songs. Also included is a couple more recently written that I want people to hear. There’s even a revised version of my most commercially successful song, "Shame on the Moon,” said Crowell. “All in good fun.”
Marking Crowell’s 19th solo effort and the first release from his new label, RC1, the project features songs originally made famous by the likes of Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, The Oak Ridge Boys, Bob Seger, Tim McGraw and more. But for Acoustic Classics, Crowell peels back the layers of familiarity on these standouts of the American song cannon, revealing the original spirit behind each track’s creation.
Real Life Real Music was founded by Kyle Hutton almost 20 years ago and they had never done a video podcast... until now. Two phenomenal songwriters and best friends, Josh Grider and Drew Kennedy, were the guinea pigs and did a fantastic hour and 50 minute concert together with as much storytelling that could fill a book.
Watching them play with (and off of) each other on stage is enjoyable to a long time fan, as well as to a music fan in general. It’s a genuine friendship. Both artists have an equally deep respect for each other, as well as the talent for playing off of each other’s songs and stories.
We enjoyed some fantastic performances, including a fantastic rendition of “Vapor Trails” from Drew Kennedy and “Bad Times Roll” from Josh Grider. While the music was amazing, some of the stories were arguably just as good. Drew Kennedy’s backstory for his song “24 Hours In New York City” had everyone in the crowd belly laughing.
A teenage Kennedy, the new girl in town, and New York at three in the morning. We couldn’t help but be impressed by the smooth teenager in the story, despite Kennedy assuring us that he was a “huge nerd”. Grider’s acoustic performance of “Bad Times Roll” encouraged the listener to keep your head up when the low points of life come around.

Cody Jinks has signed with Rounder Records. His debut for the label, Lifers, is slated for release July 27. The first single from the album, “Must Be the Whiskey” is due out on June 15.
Rounder Records President John Strohm said, “When I became the President of Rounder in the Fall of 2017, I’d already been involved in Cody’s career for a couple years. I’m well aware of his immense talent, personal integrity, and work ethic.” He continues, “It’s been my top priority since I started my job last fall to sign Cody, and I could not be more thrilled for Rounder and Concord Music to have the opportunity to work with such an incredible, groundbreaking artist.”
Tom Whalley, Chief Label Officer at Concord, concurs. “Cody is a very special, unique, one of a kind artist. He’s an abundantly gifted singer, songwriter, and performer, and I’m very proud that he has chosen to work with our team at Rounder.”
“I set out to find a great partner to license my new album to – a record company that believed in my music and my vision, ” said Jinks. “I definitely found that with Rounder Records.”Jinks has employed a unique marketing strategy that has enabled him to sell in excess of 225k independently-released recordings and consistently sell out shows all over the United States, propelling him to the forefront of the country music scene. His recordings and raucous live shows have earned him a loyal and growing fan base and have made him a favorite among critics.
Independent distribution and label services company Thirty Tigers has entered into an agreement to reissue Jinks’ back catalog, including 2016’s breakthrough I’m Not the Devil. “In all my years of doing this, I can’t remember an act whose organic growth has happened so explosively. It’s a testament to the artist and his palpable honesty, but also to his amazing team who pull all the right levers at the right time. It’s an honor to fight for his body of work so far, and I predict that upon the release of the new album, his trajectory will continue at the same explosive pace,” said label CEO David Macias.
Jinks responds, “I’ve been doing business with Thirty Tigers for a couple of years now. They’ve proven to me that they’re believers who work very hard. I couldn’t have picked a better home for my catalog.”
